Efforts to meet a court-mandate to diversify the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) have been successful, reports the New York Times (http://nyti.ms/KjxfGB).
Of the 42,161 applicants who took the firefighter exam this spring, 19,260 were nonwhite and 1,952 were women. Both numbers are roughly double the number who took the test the last time it was given, in 2007.
The newspaper reports that recruitment efforts stem from years of litigation in which New York City and the fire department were accused of racially discriminatory hiring practices.
The Justice Department filed a lawsuit in 2007 which led to a Federal District Court judge to rule that the 2007 exam was discriminatory and banned the city from hiring firefighters until it adhered to a hiring method he proposed. The city rejected his method and has declined to hire new firefighters. The department is currently short 500 firefighters.
