New York Fire Department Examinations

Special order No. 28 issued by the fire department of New York City, notifies applicants for promotion to the ranks of deputy chief and battalion chiefs as to the method of filling out and signing the application blanks for the examination. An abstract from a communication from the municipal civil service commission in regard to the examinations is also published as follows:

Record and seniority in these examinations will be rated as follows: Beginning with the date of promotion to captain (battalion chief), 80 per cent. For each additional three months in the grade within five years immediately preceding the examination, add 54 of 1 per cent, or 2 per cent, a year, malting at the end of five years, a total of 90 per cent. For each additional three months in the grade more than five years preceding the date of examination, add 1/4 of 1 per cent, or 1 per cent, a year, making at the end of ten years a maximum of 95 per cent.

Added Points

Roll of Merit, Class I and Medal or Roll of Merit, Class A and Medal or Honorable Mention and Medal, add 2 per cent. Roll of Merit, Class 2 or Roll of Merit, Class B or Honorable Mention, add 154 per cent. Roll of Merit, Class 3 or Roll of Merit, Class C or Commendation, add 1 per cent. Roll of Merit, Class D. add .25 per cent. Service Record, A, add .5 per cent. Service Record, B, add .25 per cent.

Deducted Points

For each day’s fine after January 1. 1921, deduct .5 per cent. Reprimands or cautions, to count as one-half of one day’s fine. Reprimands previous to January 1, 1921, not to be considered.
