Newport News Clean-Up Week

Newport News Clean-Up Week

The week of May 18 was set apart as Clean-Up Week in Newport News, Va., and Chief J. B. Gordon, of the fire department writes that a circular and questionnaire were sent out to the children of the public schools. In this circular they are asked by the city manager, the public health officer and the chief of the fire department to clean up Newport News during the week beginning May 18 and closing the night of the 23rd. They are asked to take the circular and questionnaire home and enlist the sympathy of their parents or guardians who, the chief remarks, will no doubt co-operate with them to the best possible extent. The circular continues in part:

The city officials above named ask that you take your father and mother on a round of your premises; look under the house and find out the things that make your surroundings ugly and that breed disease and lead to fires; go into your basements and see what you can find that ought to be moved out and hauled away, such as old plunder, boxes, barrels, paper and stuff like that; carefully inspect your back yard and notice whether there are a lot of old tin cans and other things that hold water and breed mosquitoes and look ugly and that keep your home from looking tidy; search your attic, if you have one. and see how look into the closets and see if there are any oil-soaked rags and other things like stacks of paper that might lead to a fire sometime, which much old stuff is up there that there is no need for around the home; might burn up your home ami all your treasured possessions, and when you have carefully decided on the unnecessary things that are in and under and behind your home get your father and mother to agree to have these things removed to the curb line in front of your home so that wagons can come along and haul them away, thus leaving you a home that is protected against bo:h fire and disease, and make it a much nicer place in which to live, to say nothing of how much cleaner it will make our town.

Now don’t forget that from the hour you are handed this by your teacher to the hour of midnight. May 23, you are an assistant to the city manager, the health officer and the chief of the fire department, and these officials believe that you are going to do your duty and make a report contained in this Appointment Blank just as all other employees of the city do, whatever their work may be.

If you know of a vacant lot that ruins the looks of your block because it has a lot of trash on it, or if you know of a vacant house that has trash all around it and makes everything about look cheap and ugly, it is your duty as Assistant to the city manager to call the Chamber of Commerce. 323, giving the exact location. Don’t forget this, for you are fire and health inspectors of Newport News and much depends on you.

All the girls and boys in one block ought to hold meeting and resolve that their block is to be cleaner than any block in Newport News.

You are not to report on houses or yards where other people live. But you are expected to report on your own home and to see that trash is all gotten together and put in a neat pile out on the curb line or in boxes or barrels.
