Daniel Nigro was sworn in as the new commissioner of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) yesterday at a ceremony in Brooklyn.
He replaces Sal Cassano, who had served as commissioner since 2010.
According to CBS, the new commissioner pledged to diversify what he called the “greatest fire department in the world.”
Nigro, a department veteran of 32 years, is coming out of retirement after 12 years to take on the role. He takes the reins in the wake of a tumultuous period in the FDNY punctuated by a long-running discrimination lawsuit that was only settled this year.
