No Fire Boat for Providence
The first cost of installing a fire boat at Providence, R. I., would amount to $200,000, and a crew of 18 men would be necessary, according to figures of the City Council Finance Committee, to which a resolution providing for a fire boat was referred several months ago. The committee has come to no decision upon the matter, and may keep the resolution in its files for a long time, unless ordered by the City Council to report it. In case the bill is ordered out of the committee, it is understood that the attitude of the members will be to report the plan adversely. From $100,000 to $115,000 would be necessary for the purchase of the proper kind of boat. The scheme of making over some old boat has been abandoned by the committee, on the ground that when this has been done in other cities the results have been unsatisfactory.
