NORTHEAST EXTENDS ITS WATERWORKS.

North East, Pa., is building an extensive waterworks system, which, when completed, will afford an inexhaustible simply. The present reservoir holds 4,000,000 gallons; the new dam will hold fifteen times as much, or 60,000,000 gallons. in addition to the continual supply of a good living stream, when neccssary. The source of supply will he a large number of springs, whose waters will he dammed The creek, al though itself the overflow from springs farther up, will not lie used except in emergencies The extension protect consists of a dam near (Trahatn ville schoolhouse. From this dam an 8-in. pipe will conduct the water to the present reservoir. The distance is 8000 ft. Four thousand ft of this distance has already been ditched; hut the worst part of the route is yet to he dug. as at one place the trench will lie 24 ft. deep. There are at present ten ft. of water in the reservoir and at no time within the past two years has there been less than that amount, While It is not of the quality that altogether might , he desired, still it is clean and pure, and there is plenty of it. As soon as the pines are laid, a temporary dam will he built to supply water until the permanent ini nrovement is completed. It will be at least a month before the new supply will he turned into the reservoir. The water will he of the best quality.
