NOVEL APPLICATION OF STEAM FIRE ENGINES.
In consequence of the recent unprecedentedly severe frost, the dwelling houses on Wimbledon Common were deprived of their water supply. To remedy this the Southwark and Vauxhall Water Company instructed Messrs. Shand, Mason & Co. to send one of their largest Steam Fire Engines to pump from one main by means of hose to another main beyond the obstruction. The Engine was placed near the “Rose and Crown,” and, in conjunction with two similar Steam Fire Engines, the property of the water company and constructed by the same firm, a plentiful supply was provided for the inhabitants, who otherwise would have been without water. At a test for thawing snow at Messrs. Merryweathcr A Sons’ works, a cart load was thawed in seven minutes, the steam boiler of one of their Steam Fire Engincs.being fitted with a super-heater (at a cost of thirty shillings) for the purpose.
