NY Community Seeking Fire Chief

The city of Beacon is a vibrant, exciting community in southern Dutchess County, New York, with a population of approximately 15,000 in just under five square miles. The community boasts a proud history, beautiful natural areas from the mountain to the Hudson River, and an involved and active community. The city seeks an experienced individual to become the first paid chief of the hybrid paid/volunteer department. Title:                      Fire Chief

 

Salary:                  $80,000 – 95,000

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Candidates must meet the following requirements:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND:

EITHER:      (A)                   Graduation from a regionally accredited or registered college or university with a Bachelor Degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, or related field and ten (10) years of full-time paid work experience in progressively increasing levels of responsibility, including the rank of Fire Lieutenant or higher; certification as EMT or higher; experience in hybrid department required.

OR:              (B)                     Graduation from a regionally accredited or registered college or university with an Associate Degree in Fire Science or related field and fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible volunteer experience* as a Firefighter, five (5) of which must have been served as a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, or completion of the Executive Fire Officer program from the National Fire Academy and ten (10) years of progressively responsible volunteer experience* as a Firefighter, five (5) of which must have been served as a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief or any combination thereof.  Certification as EMT or higher.  Experience in hybrid department required. 

*Applicants must submit a letter from a Fire Department or Fire District proving credit for current active volunteer experience.

NOTEUnless otherwise specified, part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated towards meeting the full-time experience requirements.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Candidates who have not previously received a permanent appointment to a Firefighter position would additionally have to meet the requirements of Section 209-w of General Municipal Law which include completion of an approved fire basic safety training program or equivalent. 

DUTIES:  This is a managerial position involving responsibility for all administrative and operational functions of the Fire Department. 

EXAMPLES OF WORK (Illustrative Only) Directs all administrative and operational functions of fire department including, but not limited to personnel, purchasing, budgeting, record keeping and property management; takes active command at fires and operational; develops operating policies and procedures; participates in collective negotiations and administers labor agreements; develops orders and directives; does related work as required.
