NY Volunteer Fire Department Says It Will Defy FDNY and Respond

The chief of a volunteer fire department based in a neighborhood in the Bronx, New York, has said he and his firefighters will continue to respond to fire calls in the area despite threats of arrest.

Chief Romeo Toro of the Aviation Volunteer Fire Department told the New YOrk Daily News  (http://nydn.us/ymuNIz) that he and his members will risk arrest and continue to respond until the mayor or Office of Fire Prevention and Control tells them to cease and desist.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) reportedly got into an altercation with Toro and some volunteers when responding to a bus accident Thursday on the Bruckner Expressway, in which police had to intervene.

FDNY Commissioner Salvatore Cassano subsequently issued a letter demanding that the Aviation volunteers cease responding, citing a lack of proper training and equipment.
