Ond Day Off in Four in Portland
Firemen of Portland, Ore., are to have every fourth day off duty instead of one day off in six, according to an ordinance passed by the city council recently following the adoption of a report of Commissioner Bigelow abolishing two engine companies and one truck company, numbering 58 men, 25 horses and considerable equipment and apparatus. Forty of the 58 men will be retained in the service to keep the department up to requirements under the one day off out of four plan. The new arrangement means that the firemen will work three 24-hour periods and then take 24 hours off. They also will receive an annual vacation of 15 working days with full pay.
