A woman was killed and three others injured during a fire in a basement apartment in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago.
The fire occurred early Friday, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune. Firefighters arriving on scene found flames shooting from the basement apartment and one victim on the exterior.
Crews accounted for three people who live on the first floor but learned others were trapped inside. The victim, a male, had managed to escape. Firefighters pulled his children and wife from the fire.
The female victim, 24, was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m. at an area hospital. The two children were transported in critical condition.
The report said a mosquitor repellent candle was mentioned having been used in the apartment, but an investigation as to cause and origin was under way.
