Ottawa Has Hot Time on Cold Day
During the 21-hour period from 12:30 p.m., January 15 to 9:30 a.m., January 16, the Ottawa, Ont., Fire Department answered 23 alarms of fire. While this may not be a local record for response, the temperature on the official thermometers in the Canadian capital at the time nearly established a record. During the period a crisp 20 degrees below zero was registered and dips to 25 degrees below were recorded.
As could be expected, most of the fires were for defective chimneys, and heating devices. However four of the incidents were serious, resulting in losses estimated at over $160,000, and 29 persons being left homeless.
