Parliament House Burns at Toronto.

The west wing of the Parliament buildings, at Toronto, Out., was destroyed September 1, by a fire, which was discovered about noon. The loss to the building is about $100,000, fully in sured, but the fine Mowat law library, one of the best collections in the Dominion, is a total loss, with no insurance. The Cabinet Council was in session, when, shortly after noon, a crash of failing glass was heard. Investigation showed that the western skylight had fallen into the light well and that black smoke was pouring from the roof. Further authentic de tails as to the handling of the fire have not been received at this writing. The Parliament build ings were opened in 1893, in the premiership of Sir Oliver Mowat. Today’s fire is believed to have been due to defective electric wiring.

A $1,500,000 fire in Monterey, Mex., was due to defective wiring.
