Pentagon Fire Fighters Operate New Vehicle
Russell McGuiney handles the wheel as Inspector Richard Jewell holds a walkietalkie while going through a trial run in their fire company’s new vehicle. The fire wagon was especially designed to travel through the 17.5 miles of corridors in the world’s largest building—the Pentagon. The custom-built vehicle’s 3-hp motor is operated by 6-volt batteries.
It once took at least 7 minutes to answer a fire alarm in the Defense Department headquarters, but now officials estimate that the fire company is only 3 minutes away from fires in the deepest areas of the building.
