Petroleum Products Go Underground
Esso Standard Oil Co. has announced that it has about completed drilling operations for underground storage of petroleum products. It is expected that more than a million barrels of the products, produced in its Baton Rouge refinery, can be accommodated in a salt dome formation near Sorrento, La., 35 miles south of its plant.
The underground cavities reportedly will help the company better meet the demands of chemical companies which use propane, ethylene, propylene and butane as basic raw materials. The five huge cavities will also provide reserve storage capacity for the products during seasons of low demand. Three of the underground installations have already been finished.
