Phone Call Saves Town
Fire originating from a defective flue did damage estimated at $8,000 at Little Rock, Bourbon county, Ky., and for a while the entire town was in danger. The general store of G. G. Hanks was destroyed, as was the store of Robert Hilman and his residence, adjoining. Mrs. Margaret Banta, telephone operator, probably saved the entire town from destruction by calling every subscriber on her board, who formed a bucket brigade and fought the flames. Mrs. Banta has been operator at Little Rock for fifteen years and on numerous occasions has warned the citizens and prevented the spread of flames.
