PIPE LINE SYSTEM FOR CHICAGO.
Not before it was needed, a pipe line service, auxiliary to the regular water mains, is under way for Chicago, Ill It is, at all events, reported among underwriters that Chief Swenie, of the fire department, has the plans for the system all arranged and that work will begin at an early date. Chief Swenie, it is stated his long been a convert to the efficiency of the system, but has never, until now, had the means to carry out his ideas. He secures the one percent, tax upon the receipts of fire insurance companies doing business in the city, and with this fund will establish this important auxiliary to the city’s fire service. The plans, as at present understood, contemplate establishing lines of ten-inch piping from the river through the more important streets of the business district. Hydrants wil be located at everv street intersection. They are arranged to have an electrical connection with the fireboat station so that from the seat of the fire the pressure may be directed to suit the exigencies of the case. The pipes will be laid deep in the ground to prevent freezing, and are allowed to stand full of water to facilitate securing an immediate pressure.
