Plaque Honors Inaja Heroes
The 11 men who died fighting a fire in the Inaja forest a year ago were honored recently when the San Diego County honor camps system dedicated a bronze plaque to their memory.
The plaque is located on a hill near the little hamlet of Santa Ysabel, overlooking the devastated area which is in the Cleveland National Forest. It is a part of a 1 1/2-acre site to be known as Inaja Memorial Park. The land was donated by the Forest Service. The memorial was paid for by men of the honor camps who earn $1.00 a day.
Seven of the men who died in the fire were from honor camps in the county. Four were U. S. Forest Service rangers.
