POLLUTION OF NEW YORK BAY.

POLLUTION OF NEW YORK BAY.

In a letter to the New York Tribune Gustav H. Schwab states that the New York Bay pollution commission through its investigations has established the fact that more than 455,000,000 gallons of sewage are now emptied into New York bay and the tidal waters of the metropolitan district every clay, and that in this putrid mass there are now more than I,000 tons of solid matter discharged into the waters contiguous to New Yorkcity daily. “Should the plan to construct a Passaic valley trunk sewer for the drainage of a number of large cities of New Jersey be carried out (he says), New York harbor will ultimately receivc an additional volume of 390,000.000 gallons of sewage emptied into the bay at one point, about three-quarters of a mile north of Robbins Reef lighthouse, every day. The New York Bay pollution commission in the course of its investigations has established another fact—namelj-, that the sewage emptied into the Hudson river, the East River and the upper bay is not carried out to sea by the ebb tide, and thus disposed of, but that the flood-tide carries back into the upper bay and the Hudson and East rivers a volume of sewage frequently as laree as that carried down by the ebb tide—in other words, that the sewage poured into the Hudson and East rivers and the upper bay oscillates to and fro between Sandy Hook and the Hudson and East rivers.” If. therefore. some scientific measure of relief is not adopted, “the Hudson, the East River and NewYork bay will within that period of time have become a noisome cesspool that will render residence on the shores of the municipalities of NewYork and New Jersey impossible.”
