POOR PROTECTION IN QUEENS BOROUGH.
Under the caption of “Very Poor Protection in Sight of New York.” the fire Insurance He_____-_____ has the following: “The authorities of Queens _____gh, New York, are now probably alive to the fact that poor hydrant service is liable to mean a big fire loss at any moment. When the cement, whiting and plaster works on Newtown creek, near Brooklyn, caught fire last Thursday, 1,000 ft. of hose was required before a stream of water could be got to reach the blaze. I11 response to a third alarm, the fireboat David Boody had to go five miles before she reached the scene. In the excitement the schooner Recnarok. with 3.00a’ tons of rock lime aboard, all ablaze, was towed to the opposite side of the creek where the Standard Oil has a large number of stills. Before the flames could be qucnchcd, one of the stills caught, and, had it not been for the lireboat David Boodv. every still would have been lost.”
