Portland Two-Platoon Bill Fails
The two-platoon bill for the Portland, Ore., fire department failed to be carried at the recent election in that city. The measure was opposed by heads of the fire department, it being argued that the bill contained “jokers” that had nothing to do with a legitimate two-platoon system such as some cities have adopted. The measure was advocated by a two-platoon committee of the firemen, James Irving being secretary of the committee. Reports from Portland state that three firemen tendered their resignations as a result of the failure of the bill to pass.
