Presentation to Chief Mertz

Presentation to Chief Mertz

The members of the Akron, Ohio, fire department, presented a $300 diamond ring to Chief John T. Mertz on March 10, which was the anniversary of his 55th birthday. There was no verbal presentation made; the members of the department simply laid the ring and card, containing the compliments of the day from the men, on his desk, where he found it when he arrived at his office on the morning of March 10. This ring was given to the Chief in appreciation of his efforts in behalf of the men in acting as their committee of one to go before the city council to have their salaries and conditions improved, and they testify that it is a fact that through his hard work and judgment they constitute one of the best paid and most contented fire departments in the state of Ohio.
