PROTECTION OF DES MOINES CAPITOL.
The capital at Des Moines, Ia., now has fire protection. Hitherto the local water company has insisted that, owing to the height at which the capital stands above the city water could not be thrown into or on the higher portions of the building. This difficulty has been overcome by connecting the new system of mains, which have been laid through the capitol grounds, with the heating and power plant which furnishes the capitol with light and heat, and is situated directly across Grand avenue, north from the building. Now, in case of fire at the capitol, pumps in the power plant will be started, and the water leading into the capitol mains from the city mains run through them. In this way the. pressure will be doubled or tripled and no disastrous results from fire are feared.
