PUBLIC INTEREST IN WATER SUPPLY SUBJECTS.
The Public Documents Division of the New York Public Library reports that it is making a special collection of material on water supply, especially from the engineering side. In addition to the annual reports of those departments and boards of the various cities of this and other countries which deal with this it has on file a large number of special reports. The demand for this material has been such that the Division has recently undertaken to supplement these reports with mounted material from newspapers and magazines. An instance of what the Public Documents Division is doing in this connection is that each issue of FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING is carefully read by checkers and synopisis of material which, in their opinion, would be of use to the library readers is transferred to the divison catalogue. In the Engineering Division of the Library there is available much technical matter bearing on this subject. The nature of the demands is varied. The material on the Hetch Hetchy proposition, for instance, was used both by readers interested in the engineering as well as by those interested in the political side. It has occurred that readers have wanted to make comparative financial and consumption calculations range of cities. The l’ublic Documents Division has also in process a detailed analysis of the reports of the various states of the Union which relate to the subject of a water-supply whether regularly published by boards of water supply or boards of public works or other beards; the reports of the Massachusetts Board of Health, for instance, containing valuable material on water supply. This analysis makes available considerable material and the collection of this material in the Library is constantly being added to and it is hoped, in time, to make it a representative collection. The chief of the Public Document Division would welcome any assistance and suggestions for the improvement of the collection by persons interested.
