Pumper Seeks New Job at 32

After 32 years—only the last four in reserve—a 400-gpm front-mount pumper has been offered for sale by the Milan, Mich., Fire Department. Built on a 1939 Ford chassis, the apparatus has a model U-40 BartonAmerican pump rated at 400 gpm at 120 psi and has a 250-gallon booster tank.

Vernon Straits, a volunteer for 38 years in the 24-member Milan Fire Department, remembers when the department bought the chassis and built the apparatus from scratch. It was Milan’s first pumper.
