Report Chief O’Connor of Chicago Will Quit
A report is current in Chicago, Ill., that Fire Marshal Thomas O’Connor, chief of the Chicago fire department, will very soon give way to a successor. Chief O’Connor suffered a nervous breakdown two years ago and was absent at that time for several months. He has been in the department thirty-six years, joining as a truckman in 1886. Three years later he was promoted to lieutenancy and in 1893 was advanced to the rank of captain. In 1900 he was the only candidate to receive 100 per cent, in an examination for promotion.
