REQIREMENTS FOR A CONDUIT.

An underground conduit for ducts for fire alarm wires, etc., should be as follows: Electrolysis proof; non-corrosive and proof against any form of deteribration or decay; possessed of the highest possible insulating qualities; dry and moistureproof, with watertight and airtight joints, so that gas or water cannot penetrate, and joints self-aligning with a permanently fixed alignment insured; injuries to covering of cables by drawing in and out of subway should be entirely provided against by using a duct with a round hole, leaving a smooth and strictly non-abrasive inner surface; it should be light in weight for the sake of cheapness in freighting, handling, and laying; strong and tough for proper protection of cables and the avoidance of loss from breakage in shipping and handling; and made in long sections or units, so as to reduce the number of joints, for the sake of facilitating rapid and cheap laying.
