Reunion of Canton Volunteer Fire Fighters
A reunion of the fire fighters of the volunteer days of Canton, Ohio, was held on Thursday evening, September 27 in that city. Prominent among those present were Chief R. O. Mesnar, the present head of the fire department and who was the last volunteer chief, and Assistant Chief F. X. Schario of the department. There are some forty or fifty survivors of the five volunteer hose and ladder companies which began to disappear about 35 years ago when the department adopted horses to draw the engines. I here were in the volunteer department about 120 members. The members received 40 cents an hour for all time actually spent at fires. There was a large attendance of the former volunteers at the meeting.
