RUNNING WATER NOT SELF-PURIFYING.
Dr. Darlington, health commissioner of New York city, in a recent report on the necessity of filtration, thus combats the theory that running water is self-purifying: “It is an old but fallacious idea that flowing water purifies itself. Within a short distance of its source, the impurties discoverable by chemical methods may be entirely lost; bacteriologically, or rather from a pathogenic standpoint, however, it does not change perceptibly. Where we have contamination from human excrement in the water, we may look for human diseases to follow.”
Mr. F. F. Proctor has made the interesting announcement that in furtherance of his plan to have at his Fifth avenue theatre a stock company to rank with the best in New York, he has signed a contract with Miss Amelia Bingham whereby she will appear all next season as leading woman at that house. For leading man of the same company Mr. Proctor is in negotiation with several weliknown players, including Messrs. Frank Worthing, Charles Richnian and Orrin Johnson, but no contracts have been signed as yet. The other players, it is announced, will be correspondingly as important as those named.
