Seagrave Engine Tests

Tests of two Seagrave triple combination pumping engines, chemical and hose cars were conducted at Springfield, Mass., on December 80. The results were satisfactory and as follows:

Results of Tests of Seagrave Combined Chemical, Pump and Hose Wagon. City— Springfield, Mass. December 30, 1916. Conducted by Chas. R. Barker. Type—Model S. Manufacturer’s No. 16026. Engine—6 cylinder, 6 3/4 inches by 8. Pump—Centrifugal. Gear Ratio; Engine to Pump: 1 to 2.25. Contract Requirements: 120 pounds net water pressure at pump discharge 1000 to 1100 gallons; 200 pounds net water pressure at pump discharge 700 gallons; 250 pounds net water pressure at pump discharge 500 gallons. Tested at: Lake. Lift: 6.5 feet.

First Test.—Duration: Two hours. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line of 50 feet and one 100 feet of 2 1/2-inch C. R. L. hose into deluge set with a 2-inch nozzle. Average Discharge and Pressure: 1050 gallons at 140 pounds net water pressure.

Second Test.—Duration 30 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line 100 feet of 2 1/2-inch C. R. L. hose with l 3/4-inch nozzle. Average Discharge and Pressure: 716 gallons at 219 pounds net water pressure. Speed R. P. M., Engine: 794. Pump: 1786. Displacement: 0.401. Slip.

Third Test.—Duration: 30 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line, 300 feet of 2 1/2-inch C. R, L. hose with l 3/4-inch nozzle. Average Discharge and Pressure: 597 gallons at 255 pounds net water pressure. Speed R. P. M., Engine: 841. Pump: 1892. Displacement: .315 Slip. General Remarks (As to performance and condition of machine during and after test) Tests Satisfactory.

Engine—6 cylinder, 5 3/4-inch by 6 1/2-inch stroke. Pump—Centrifugal. Gear Ratio; Engine to Pump: 1 to 2.06. Contract Requirements: 120 pounds net water pressure at pump dicharge of 750 to 800 gallons; 200 pounds net water pressure at pump discharge of 450 gallons, and 250 pounds net water pressure at pump discharge of 375 gallons. Tested at: Lake. Lift: 6.5 feet.

First Test.—Duration: 2 hours. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: Two lines, 150 feet each of 2 1/2-inch C. R. L. hose into deluge set with 1 3/4-inch nozzle. Average Discharge and Pressure: 772 gallons at 137 pounds net water pressure. Speed R. M. P., Engine: 915. Pump: 1885. Displacement: 0.409. Slip..

Second Test.—Duration: 30 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line, 150 feet Of 2 1/2-inch C. R. L. hose with play pipe having a 1 1/4-inch nozzle. Average Discharge and Pressure: 510 gallons at 209 pounds net water pressure. Speed R. P. M., Engine: 1005. Pump: 2070. Displacement: 0.246. Slip.

Third Test.—Duration 30 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line, 350 feet of 2 1/2-inch C. R. L. hose with play pipe having a 1 1/8-inch nozzle. Average Discharge and Pressure: 387 gallons at 259 pounds net water pressure. Speed R. P. M., Engine: 1109. Pump: 2284. Displacement: 0.169. Slip. General Remarks (As to performance and condition of machine during and after test). Tests Satisfactory.
