September Fire Losses.
Those who have noted the list of fires which involve a loss of $10,000 and more as compiled and presented from week to week in FIRE AND WATER ENGINEERING must have realized that the fire losses for September would be well up toward the average loss month by month. Fires of the magnitude noted have numbered 230.,
Of $10,000 fires there were 79; $20,000 to $30,000, 39; $30,000 to $50,000, 36; $50,000 to $75,000, 31; $75,000 to $100,000, 15; $100,000 to $200,000, 25; $200,000 and over, 13. The greatest pecuniary loss was inflicted by ten fires, as follows: Toronto, Ont., Parliament buildings, and Pittsburg, Pa., storage warehouse and Poplar Bluffs, Mo., hotel, etc., $500,000 each; Portland, Ore., flouring mill, $375,000; Cleveland, Ohio, oil warehouse; Lowell, Mass., tannery; Columbia, S. C., college buildings; Midland, Ore., lumber yard, $250,000 each; Tacoma, Wash., stock-food plant, $221,000. The total loss for nine months plant, $221,000. The total los for nine months from January to September, both inclusive, was $151,099,950. The following comparative table gives the losses month by month for three years :
