Shields for Tank Car Ends

The ends of railroad tank cars carrying flammable compressed gases must have protective shields, the Hazardous Materials Regulations Board of the United States Department of Transportation has ruled. The intent is to reduce the number of head punctures on tank cars.

The amendment to DOT regulations covering tank cars, effective last August 30, states that the steel shields at each end of a tank car must be at least ½-inch thick and in the shape of a trapezoid.
