SOLE ENTRANT SUCCESSFULLY PASSES TWELNE-HOUR PUMPING TEST

Two G. M. C. Pumpers Go Through the Test Conducted at Buffalo Fire Chief’s Convention

A TWELVE-HOUR pumping test of smaller capacity motor pumpers was held during the Buffalo Convention of the International Association of Fire Engineers on August 26, 1924, under the direction of George W. Booth, Chief Engineer, National Board of Fire Underwriters. While all manufacturers of this type of apparatus were invited to take part the only entrant was the General Motors Truck Company of Pontiac. The two machines entered by this company, one a 400-gallon capacity outfit and the other 300-gallon, both equipped with Northern pumps, went through the gruelling test with flying colors.

K-4111353A; rated capacity at 120 pounds pressure, 400 gallons; rated capacity at 200 pounds pressure. 200 gallons; rated capacity at 250 pounds pressure, 150 gallons. Weight, without men or hose. 8,000 pounds; on rear wheel, 4,800 pounds.

Gear ratio, engine to pump 1.5806 to 1 and 2.43 to 1, 3.92 to 1; pump, type, 37 C No. 142; Northern Eire Apparatus Co., Minneapolis; dis placement per revolution, 0.485 gallons.

Gasoline tanks, number, 1; capacity, 20 gallons; feed, gravity.

Height of center of suction above ground, 38 inches.

Results of 12-hour Test

First period, rated capacity. 400 gallons per minute at 120 pounds net pump pressure; delivered 413 gallons per minute at 127 pounds net pump pressure for a period of 6 hours; engine speed. 1,382 revolutions per minute; pump speed, 875 revolutions per minute.

Second period, rated capacity, 200 gallons per minute at 200 pounds net pump pressure; delivered 227 gallons per minute at 209 pounds net pump pressure for a period of three hours; engine speed, 1,382 revolutions per minute; pump speed, 569 revolutions per minute.

Third period, rated capacity, 150 gallons per minute at 250 pounds net pump pressure; delivered 182 gallons per minute at 263 pounds net pump pressure for a period of three hours; engine speed, 1,226 revolutions per minute; pump speed, 505 revolutions per minute.

Suction life, 9 feet, 6 inches; during 12-hour period, 70 gallons of gasoline used. Engine ran continuously, and operation of pumper was satisfactory throughout.

First period, rated capacity, 300 gallons per minute at 120 pounds net pump pressure; delivered 311 gallons per minute at 126 pounds net pump pressure, for a period of 6 hours; engine speed, 1.498 revolutions per minute; pump speed, 943 revolutions per minute.
