STEAMBOAT FIRE DRILL.
The fire-drill on board the Tamils, as inspected by Deputy Surveyor of Customs Matthew Coneys at Far Rockaway, Que_____ns borough, New York, was pronounced utterly inadequate and at tended with much confusion, the crew not being able to understand what the first mate required of them. After much trouble two streams of water were got to work; but, when the order came to man the lifeboats, the deckhands, who were holding the hose and were suppos_____d to stay at their posts dropped the nozzles and ran for one of the six lifeboats and succeeded in launching it in fifty-five seconds. Five men ar assigned to each lifeboat, but among them art the six waiters and the bartender—the last being more expert with the syphon than the hose nozzle—while the waiters shift from one boa: to another and often remain at Coney Island when the boat starts on its last trip for New York. The fire-drill on the Grand Republic, sis t r ship to the illfated General Slocum, of dis astrous memory, was much quicker and better than on the Taurus. On board the Sandy Ho_____ steamer Sandy Hook good work was done. The crew got seven streams of water to work and lowered six lifeboats in six minutes. The steamboat Asbury Park also made a good showing. This year the work of enforcing the steamboat regulations has been unusually effective.
