Life nets have their psychological as well as their material value, as witnessed by this recent incident in Council Bluffs, Ia. A despondent young man who perched on the Iowa Highway No. 375 Bridge support about one mile from the city, over the Rock Island Railroad tracks, evidently thought his suicide attempt was thwarted as Council Bluffs firemen brought their life net into position. Shortly after this picture was taken, he allowed the sheriff to assist him hack onto the bridge, only minutes before a fast passenger train was due. According to Fire Chief Waldo Merrill of Council Bluffs, the net-holding procedure was not entirely according to regulations because of the poor footing for the net holders (double rail tracks and the rock ballast) and the need for setting open the net on the other side of the bridge and quickly bringing it into position on the side below the victim.
