Superintendent Thomas Retired

The Municipal Council of Lowell, Mass., at a recent adjourned meeting retired Robert J. Thomas as superintendent of the water works and elected Assistant Superintendent Robert Gardner to succeed Mr. Thomas as superintendent. Superintendent Thomas has been head of the Lowell water works for nearly twenty-five years. He is a member of the American Water Works Association and is a past-president of that organization. The new Superintendent, Mr. Gardner, was born in Scotland; went to Lowell in 1870 and has lived there continuously since then. He has been connected with the Lowell water department since 1883. He was for a long time inspector and of recent years has been assistant superintendent. His knowledge of the water system is intimate. In speaking of Mr. Gardner’s appointment as superintendent, a city official said he believed the water department has secured a first class official in Robert Gardner; that he is familiar with the department and that the value of his services will make itself felt in his new position more than ever before and that he had always been regarded as a splendid official for the department, conscientious, painstaking and thorough. He added: “I know we have the right man in the right place.”

Robert J. Thomas.
