Tacoma Fire Department Parade

The illustration herewith, which was kindly furnished by Chief E. C. Carlson of the Tacoma, Wash., fire department, shows the department forming for a parade in front of the fire headquarters building of the city. This parade was held at the conclusion of Fire Prevention Week, October 9 to 16, and each apparatus bore canvas banners inscribed with Fire Prevention warnings, some of which read: “Learn what the causes of fire are and eliminate them from your home and office.” “Eighty-five out of 100 fires are caused by acts of carelessness. Make every day fire prevention day.” “A fake alarm fiend is worse than a criminal.” “Give the fire department the right of way.”

Representatives from Troop 19 and Troop 3 of the Tacoma Boy Scouts in uniform rode on one side of the fire apparatus. Five automobiles carrying local officials brought up the rear and the parade was reviewed by Mayor C. M. Riddle of lacoma. Chief Carlson was appointed at the head of the Tacoma department on May 8. 1916, and has been a member of the department since 1894, when he joined it on August 4 of that year as chief’s driver. He was promoted on April 1. 1896, to lieutenant and in May, 1898, he became captain to F.nginc Com pany Ni. 1, and served in that capacity until he was matfr chief of that department.
