Test of Ahrens-Fox Motor Combined Pump and Hose Wagon at Chester

An Ahrens-Fox motor combined pump and hose wagon recently delivered to Chester, Pa., was given a test on September 15, the test being conducted by Chas. R. Barker. The details of the test were as follows: Type L-2. Engine, 6 cylinder, 5 7/8×7. Mfrs. No. 701. Pump, multiplex piston, 6 cylinders, doubleacting 3-3⅝ ins. and 3-4 in., stroke, 6 inches. Gear ratio, engine to pump, 3.733 to 1. Contract requirements, 900 to 1,000 gals, per minute from 10-foot lift and 120 pounds net pump pressure. Tested at draft from city dock. Lift, 10.0 to 7.1 feet. First test—Duration two hours. Layout of hose and nozzles—one line of 50 feet of 2 1/2-inch rubber hose with 1 1/2inch nozzle and one line of 100 feet with 1 1/2inch nozzle. Average discharge and pressure, 1,129 gallons at 129.5 pounds. Engine speed, R. P. M., 1,267; pump speed, R. P. M., 339.4; displacement, 3.326. Remarks, satisfactory. Second test—Duration thirty minutes. Layout of hose and nozzles—One line of 250 feet of 2 1/2-inch rubber hose, with 1 1/2-inch nozzle. Average discharge and pressure, 556 gals, at 210 pounds; engine speed, R. P. M., 1,138; pump speed, R. P. M., 304.8; displacement, 1.824. Remarks, satisfactory. Third test— Duration thirty minutes. Layout of hose and nozzles—One line of 300 feet of 254-inch rubber hose with 1 1/8-inch nozzle. Average discharge and pressure, 460 gals, at 266 pounds; engine speed, R. P. M., 1,148; pump speed, R. P. M., 307.2; displacement, 1.497. Remarks, satisfactory. General remarks-—Engine ran well. Test satisfactory.
