Tests of a Seagrave Engine at Boston

The following tests of a Seagrave combination pumping engine, chemical and hose wagon were made at Boston, July 20th. Conducted By: Floyd H. Hazard ad Robert G. Clarke, assisted by Clarence Goldsmith, E. M. Byington and C. E. Stewart. Type: 4-stage centrifugal. Manufacturers No. 14,221. Engine: 0-cylinder; 5 ¾-inch bore, 6 1/2-inch stroke; 79.3 h. p. (S. A. E.) Pump: 10-inch. Gear Ratio: Engine to Pump: 1 to 2.00. Contract Requirements: 750 gallons at 120 pounds net pump presure; 600 gallons at 160 pounds net pump pressure; 450 gallons at 200 pounds net pump pressure; 375 gallons at 250 pounds net pump pressure; 150 gallons at 350 pounds net pump pressure. Tested At: Wharf. Lift: to feet 2 1/2 inches.

First Test,—Duration: 2 hours. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: Two lines, 100 feet and 150 feet of 2Li-inch hose to turret pipe; 1.7555-inch nozzle. Average discharge and pressure: 72.6 pounds nozzle pressure; 779 gallons at 127 pounds net pump pressure. Engine Speed, R. P. M. : 988. Pump Sped, R. P. M.: 7036. Displacement: 0.382 gallon. Remarks: Satisfactory.

Second Test.—Duration: 15 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line, 100 feet of 2½inch hose to turret pipe; 1.63-ineh nozzle. Average discharge and pressure: 68.8 pounds nozzle pressure; 056 gallons at 166 pounds net pump pressure Engine Speed, R. P. M.: 978. Pump Speed, R. P. M. : 2015. Displacement: 0.326 gallon. Remarks: Satisfactory.

Third Test.—Duration : 30 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line, 150 feet of 2½inch hose to turret pipe; 1.255-inch nozzle. Average discharge and pressure: 113 pounds noz2le pressure; 495 gallons at 214 pounds net pump pressure. Engine Speed, R. P. M.: 1039. Pump Speed, R. P. M.: 2140. Displacement: 0.231 gallon. Remarks: Satisfactory.

Fourth Test.—Duration: 30 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line, 300 feet of 2 ½inch hose to turret pipe; 1.003-inch nozzle. Average discharge and pressure: 172.9 pounds nozzle pressure; 391 gallons at 267 pounds net puinp pressure. Engine Speed, R. P. M.: 1,121. Pump Speed, R. P. M.: 2,310. Displacement: 0.169 gallon. Remarks: Satisfactory.

1’ifth Test.—Duration: 10 minutes. Layout of Hose and Nozzles: One line, 50 feet of 2j4-inch hose to a throttling gate and 400 feet of 2 1/2-inch hose from thence to a ¾-inch nozzle. Average discharge and presure: 98.4 pounds nozzle pressure; 165 gallons at 352 pounds net pump pressure. Engine Speed, R. P. M.: 1,298. Pump Speed, R. P. M.: 2,675. Displacement: 0.062 gallon. Remarks: Satisfactory. General Remarks: Excellent.
