The Burning of the Vigilancia.

The Burning of the Vigilancia.

It is very fortunate for the city of New York that it has such a splendid fleet of fireboats, as there is such a long and valuable water front to protect. This was particularly apparent a short time ago when the coast steamboat “Vigilanti” was destroyed while tied up to the Brooklyn docks. Had fireboats not been convenient, there is no knowing how much property would have been sacrificed. As it was, the valuable vessel was so soon enveloped in flames and, in addition, the tons of water poured into her hold gave her a list, and in an incredibly short time she was little better than an old hulk. As will be seen by the photograph, especially taken for this journal, the vessel was all on fire at the time the boats arrived. Quick work and heavy streams saved the adjoining property, but the boat itself became a complete wreck and the loss reached in the neighborhood of half a million dollars.
