THE CATSKILL WATER CONTRACT.
As was anticipated in these columns, the contract for building the first section of the aqueduct that will bring the Esopus watershed water to New York city has been awarded to the McNally company, of Pittsburg, for $4,126,423. The section extends through Putnam and the northern portion of Westchester counties. It is generally understood that the Sullivans—the East Side Tammany politicians are considerably interested financially in the contract.
Excise Commissioner Henry Miller, former chief of the East Orange, N. J., fire department died suddenly in that city on March 23. He was the first signer of the rolls of the volunteer tire department in 1879. On February 15, 1884, he was elected its chief and held that position for nine years. His funeral was attended by a strong delegation from the fire department, including Chief William E. Markwith and Assistant Chief John Reeves,
