Tor many years the firm of Andrew J. Morse & Son, Boston, has held a leading position among manufacturers of brass goods for fire department use. Its Siamese nozzles and standpipes for fireboats have become national in importance, as they are made with great care and delivered only after being thoroughly tested. The illustrations of the Monitor nozzle accompanying this notice show this tine fire-tool in three positions. It is especial lv designed for fireboats, but may b utilised for either purposes where large streams are necessary, and it may be easily worked in all directions. It lias a full-size waterway, and, consequently, throws a solid stream. It may be operated with a lever or with a gear-wheel. There are a large number of these nozzles in use on fireboats, fourteen being in service in Boston and New York alone, while Brooklyn and Baltimore have six. Besides its adaptability for fireboats, it may be used for mill-protection or for yards where valuable property is in danger from fires. Its merits have been approved by the board of fire underwriters and adopted by a large number of fire departments everywhere. Among the many articles manufactured by Andrew J. Morse & Son those connected with fire appliances are naturally of most interest to members of the fire service. Of these not the least useful and effective is the Morse Monitor nozzle, which was first introduced in 1881. It enjoys the fullest indorsement of all fire insurance interests, and at the suggestion of insurance men large numbers of these nozzles have been installed, and are now in service at some of the most important risks on this continent, whereby the insurance rates have been appreciably decreased. In the Monitor nozzle the waterway is full size and gives equal volume at all angles. There is no dividing the stream or turning it at right angles before reaching the discharge pipe, whereby extra pressure is exerted on the pumps, with no increase in the stream, whose range is from perpendicular to ten degrees below horizontal. The chamber rotates completely on the base, and thus any desired spot can be reached by the stream, which, when once directed, does not deviate under pressure, nor does the Monitor require any further attention. One man can start a large number of streams, and each will reach the spot desired, without further attention. This nozzle is manufactured in several designs and various sizes, and meets all requirements for fireboat, tugboat, water tower, hose wagon, or chemical engine service, and is equally adapted for use in mills, elevators, lumbet yards and freight houses, or for piers, etc. The accompanying illustration shows a Monitor nozzle worked by a geared wheel, suitable for hose wagons and water towers. Fifty-six Morse Monitor nozzles have just been selected and ordered for the protection of the buildings and contents by the World’s Fair, St. Louis, and others have recently been installed as follows: Thirty-six in freightsheds of the Grand Trunk railway at Portland, Me.; thirty-five in the freighthouses of the Boston & Maine railway. They have also been installed on the tugs of the Pennsylvania railway, the New York Central & Hudson River railway, the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, the Plant steamboat line, the Palmer line, and in many mills, breweries, etc.
