The Porterville Plant Pays.
City ownership of waterworks pays big in Porterville, Cal. With rates much lower than in some cities with privately owned plants, the Porterville system nets the city $1,000 a month. These facts were brought out in the annual report of the superintendent. When the plant was taken over it was sufficient for the needs of Porterville at that time, and from time to time extensions have been made until now, in addition to paying for itself, the receipts of the plant have been such that extensions to more than double the original size have been paid for as well. The board is considering bids for a new well of 150 inches to furnish water for another proposed extension. The cost ranges from $4.50 to $5 a foot, including casing of a 14-inch hole.
