The Quantity and Variety of Fire Hose in Service.
KINDS OK FIRE HOSE IN SERVICE.
As of interest to all fire department officials and fire hose manufacturers we print below a carefully compiled tabulated statement of the quantities and various kinds of fire hose in use in the different fire departments of the United States and Canada in the month of June, 1888, as far as, with considerable labor, it was in our power to gather the information. In this table will be found the number of departments reporting from each State and Territory of the Union and Province of Canada, with the quantities of cotton, rubber, leather and linen hose in service in each. We regret that in so many instances our correspondents have omitted to mention the material of the hose in use, so that it has had to go unclassified ; but even in its imperfect state we think the exhibit, which is the first of its kind which has been made public, will be something of a surprise to those interested, and at some future time we trust to be enabled to present a more full and accurate one. Under the head of “ linen ” hose we think there can be no question that our informants have, in many cases, made mistaken reports, as we know of a number of fire departments where the hose is described as linen when in reality it is of cotton, rub ber lined.
