The municipal finances of Chicago are in a bad way and necessity compels the saving of money somehow. The fire department does not seem a good subject upon which to practice economy, unless it is overstaffed. Anyway, the 1918 appropriation was £754,000, but in 1919 is to be £290,000, and causes a reduction of the personnel by 1,000 men. If they can be spared, well and good; if not, it is a measure of false economy.
