The home of Paul A. DeSarno, a prominent attorney and former borough councilman and public defender, was destroyed in a fire Monday morning, reports mycentralljersey.com.
DeSarno’s son, Henry, 27, is in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, and wife, Kim Klitzke DeSarno, 54, and younger son, Arthur, 20, are in critical at the Burn Unit at St. Barnarbas Medical Center in Livingston, according to hospital spokespeople and police. Paul DeSarno and two other family members were treated and released, according to a Robert Wood spokesman.
The fire forced four of the the family members to climb to the roof and two of them to jump out, officials said.
The other family members are Shelby DeSarno, a 2014 graduate of Sayreville War memorial High School, and her maternal grandfather, Max Klitzke, 83, according to an online newsletter published by the family’s church, Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in South River. The newsletter requested prayer for the DeSarno family.
Firefighters had to evacuate the home before the second floor collapsed, officials said.
