TO REDUCE FIRE-LOSS AT OAKLAND.

Oakland, Cal., is to be put under the strict inspection rules of the Pacific Board of Fire Un derwriters for the purpose of removing causes of preventable fires and of supervising all elements of fire-risk which can be controled. Steps have been taken by the board to go before the city council and obtain the authority to establish the inspection bureau. Inspection under the direction of the underwriters, with a bureau maintained at the hoard’s expense, would mean, argue those advocating the plan, that the city would he cleaned of rubbish and kept clean; that hundreds of basements filled with inflammable goods, dangerously stored, would be examined and the risks from fires removed as far as possible; that the householders would he taught what was dangerous and how to avoid these risks in great measure.
