Trouble Between Firemen.

Trouble Between Firemen.

The conflict between the Franklin Fire Company of Chester, Pa., and the new chief, Thomas M. Brooks, has resulted in injunction proceedings, which will be argued before Judge Clayton, at Media, on May 30. A vacancy was created in the chief engineerehip by the resignation of Andrew McClure. His successor, Mr. Brooks, was appointed by the Mayor. The Franklin contested the right of the Mayor to fill the vacancy, arguing that their chief should be named by the department. Select council, however, confirmed the Mayor’s appointment, and the Franklin sought to throw the matter into court. They said they would not obey the chief, as they were a volunteer department and not supported, except incidentally, by the city. At a recent fire the Franklin insisted upon going inta service when ordered otherwise by the chief. As a result he ordered the hranklin out of service. The suspension was good for five days, at the end of which time, select council not taking action, the Franklin resumed service. On Wednesday, through their counsel, W. B. Broomall, an injunction was served upon C hief Brooks restraining him from interfering with the Franklin in the exercise of their chartered rights.

THE STEED OK Fish.—Now that every effort is being made to increase the speed of ocean steamers, it is interesting to know the speed with which different fish can pass through the water. For long-distance swimming the shark may be said to hold the record, as he can outstrip the swiftest ships, apparently without effort, swimming and playing around them, and ever on the lookout for prey. Any human being falling overboard in shark-frequented waters has very little chance of escape, so rapid is the action of the shark, the monster of the deep. The dolphin, another fast swimming fish, is credited with a speed of considerable over twenty miles an hour. For short distances the salmon can outstrip every other fish, accomplishing its twenty-five miles an hour with case. The Spanish mackerel is one of the fastest of food fishes, and cuts the water like a yacht, Predatory fishes are generally the fastest swimmers.
