Two Platoon System for Chicago.
An ordinance has been introduced in the Chicago council for provid ing for the establishment of a two-platoon system in the fire department. In the absence of funds sufficient to apply the law, if it passes, to the entire department, the ordinance provides that it be first applied to the first battalion, in the downtown district, where it was tried three years ago. The ordinance provides that the two platoons alternate night and day, with the night shift going on at 6 o’clock p. m. and working until 8 p. m., and the day shift beginning at 8 a. m. and working until 6 p. m. It was shown that for the purpose of applying the system to the first battalion it would require the expenditure of but $53,730 extra for one year, and when the men would attain their highest rank by virtue of time served would add $38,585 to tinexpense of the department. The ordinance wnreferred to the finance committee.
