Two Platoons in Milwaukee

The fire boat of Milwaukee, Wis., Engine No. 1, was made a two platoon company an January 6. Unsuitable sleeping quarters made it compulsory. The crew has been increased from 12 to 16 members, which allows a crew of eight men to be on duty all the time, changing at 8 a. m. and 6 p. m., with no meal hours. This plan will be given a tryout, Chief Clancy says, and if it proves satisfactory, may result in the leasing of a dock or some other point for fireboat purposes, as no building is required. “The quarters of the boat crew are unfit for habitation and not made for any living being to sleep in,” said Chief Clancy. “The building is a hovel made of matched fencing with no plaster and the like. The men have slept there three years and it is about time to make a change. I became tired of waiting for the city to purchase a new site and established the two platoon system for the winter months.”
